The Gagadju Association was incorporated in September 1980. The Gagadju people on whose land the Ranger Uranium Mine is situated are made up of a number of clans. By the Rules of the Association, membership is open to those persons normally and permanently resident in the Region or such other locations as the Committee determines from time to time. There is a Management Committee comprised of between seven and 12 members.
The Association makes decisions as to how to allocate royalty monies received by the Northern Land Council from the Ranger Uranium mine under an Agreement of 3 November 1978, pursuant to Section 44 of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). The Association provides a range of services to its members including housing, health and education, transport and employment, as well as income in the form of annual distributions to its members. |
