Summary Information:
The Girringun Elders and Reference Group represents the native title and cultural heritage rights and interests over land and waters for the Jirrbal (Dyribal), Waragamay, Nywaigi, Bandjin, Warungnu and Girramay peoples, who are six of the traditional owner groups of the southern Wet Tropics region.
Detailed Information:
The aims of the Reference Group include:

  • Asserting and pursuing traditional owners' rights as custodians and owners of the land through native title claims, land purchases and other processes;
  • Asserting and pursuing Aboriginal traditional ownership of Aboriginal culture and knowledge;
  • Facilitating training and employment programs for Aboriginal people;
  • Negotiating land-use agreements (especially joint management agreements) with present land managers and administrators;
  • Establishing good, long-term relationships with people of the region;
  • Working with traditional owners and other Aboriginal groups towards the survival of Aboriginal culture and promotion of other Aboriginal issues;
  • Negotiating and liaising with government and other bodies on issues affecting traditional owners.

    To further these aims Girringun is involved in: native title research (in particular by way of taking oral histories); talking with local government in relation to recognition statements and planning for future land development; applying for funds for land purchase through the Indigenous Land Corporation; working to get greater involvement in management of Wet Tropics World Heritage areas and National Parks; creating better employment and business opportunities for Aboriginal people; discussion and negotiation with developers and others about recognition, protection and management of native title, cultural heritage and other Aboriginal interests.
