Sub Category:Joint Venture Agreement
Place:West Cape York
State/Country:Queensland, Australia
Subject Matter: | Economic Development | Employment and Training | Mining and Minerals
Summary Information:
The Napranum, Mapoon and Aurukun Timber Joint Venture Agreement is one of two joint venture schemes to create development opportunities for West Cape York Aboriginal communities through operations to salvage timber from bauxite mine operations in the region. According to Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, the joint venture agreements will generate more than 20 jobs for local community members.

Under the Napranum, Mapoon and Aurukun agreement, the larger of the two joint ventures, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between key parties to develop a long-life timber mill. The project will source timber from a local mining lease and mill it for the high value market. The joint venture is supported by Comalco, the operator of bauxite mining operations.

Announcing the two joint venture agreements on 17 August 2004, Mr Beattie said: 'Through the Cape York Partnerships program, the Queensland Government has recognised the importance of developing joint venture partnerships between the private sector and Indigenous communities for a range of Indigenous micro business communities… These two joint venture schemes are a good example of development opportunities available on Cape York that can generate new local jobs'.
