The National Government of South Africa sits in Cape Town and consists of two houses of parliament, the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces. The National Assembly is comprised of members elected on a five year basis, while the National Council of Provinces consists of 90 members chosen by the ten provinces, of whom 54 are permanent members and 36 special delegates. The role of the Council is to ensure 'that national and provincial interests are aligned in national legislation that affects the provinces'. The National Government's law making powers are subject to the South African Constitution.
The Government is headed by a President who can hold that position for a maximum of two five-year terms. |
