The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Board was established by the Queensland Government in June 1999.
The Board is Queensland Government's peak advisory body on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy and development. The Board replaces the previous Indigenous Advisory Council.
The Board has a diverse membership that consists of Elders and community people from across a wide range of experience with the capacity to provide independent and credible advice to Government which is grounded in community experience. The Board has the capacity to bring together key community leaders, Elders, and community organisations from across Queensland to inform advice and also the capacity to make independent public statements on issues of significance to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Queensland.
Research and policy information is provided by community groups, community organisations, the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy and other Government departments as requested.
ATSIAB's terms of reference include the provision of advice on the implementation of the recommendations of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. |
