The Sahtu Dene includes the people of the Locheaux/ Hareskin, Mountain Lake and Bear Lake. Traditional lands are located in the south western area of the Northwest Territories in the Mackenzie Mountains and along the Mackenzie and Bear Rivers. Contemporary Sahtu communities include Déline, Tulit’a, Colville Lake, Fort Good Hope and Norman Wells. The Sahtu Dene Tribal Council is a signatory to the Sahtu Dene Métis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement which took effect in June 1994. Sahtu Dene communities are also involved in self-government negotiations with the Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories. |
