The Braiakaulung Advisory Committee was formally established in early 1998 following a period of extensive discussion and consultation with members of the local Indigenous community. The partnership, established through the formation of the Committee was, in part, a recognition of the need for the local government council to acknowledge and openly embrace the traditional owners of the land, and issues associated with reconciliation.
Detailed Information:
The aims and objectives of the Committee are to: - Advise on council policies and how they relate to the Koorie community; - Advise the council on Aboriginal reconciliation; - Facilitate major events including Koorie input and participation; - Promote recognition and awareness of Koorie culture in council and the wider community; - Ensure information sharing about council strategies, policies and programs; - Maximise the promotion of opportunities for people through the council and other programs including training and employment for young people; - Encourage the promotion of positive messages about Koorie initiatives and achievements; - Assist in the development of strategies for tackling identified problems; - Advise the council on cultural heritage issues.
