In 1999 Phillips Oil Company signed a landmark agreement with the Larrakia people of Darwin over the commercial development of a liquefied Natural Gas Plant at Wickam Point in Darwin Harbour.
In 1998, the National Native Title Tribunal had approved the compulsory acquisition of any native title rights and interests for the construction of the Plant, but the company recognised the long term benefits of an agreement with the Indigenous peoples. The agreement ensured employment opportunities for the Larrakia people as well as environmental and site protection safeguards. |
