Makivik Corporation was created in 1978 pursuant to the signing of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement (JBNQA). Makivik is the recognized Inuit Party to the Agreement. It is a non-profit organisation owned by the Inuit of Nunavik. Its central mandate is the protection of the integrity of the JBNQA, and focuses on the political, social, and economic development of the Nunavik region.

Makivik Corporation has a Board of Directors composed of 16 elected members, a five member elected Executive, and five appointed Nunavik Governors. Its Corporate Objectives are as follows: - To receive, administer, use and invest the compensation money intended for the Inuit, as provided for in the JBNQA; - To relieve poverty and to promote the welfare, advancement, and education of the Inuit; - To foster, promote, protect and assist in preserving the Inuit way of life, values and traditions; - To initiate, expand and develop opportunities for the Inuit to participate in the economic development of their society; - To exercise the functions vested in it by the JBNQA and other Acts; - To develop and improve the Inuit communities and to improve their means of actions; - To assist in the creation, financing or developing of businesses, resources, properties and industries of the Inuit.
