| The Grand Council of the Crees is the political body that represents the Crees or ‘Eeyouch’ of Eastern James Bay and Southern Hudson Bay in Northern Quebec. The Council was formed in 1974 during negotiations between the Eeyouch and the Quebec and Canadian governments about their rights in regard to the James Bay Hydroelectric Project. The Grand Council was set up at a council of Cree leaders as a body who would represent the community. The Grand Council has twenty members including a Grand Chief and Deputy-Grand Chief, Chiefs elected by each of the nine Cree communities, and one other representative from each community.
Since the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement in 1975, a Cree Regional Authority was developed to serve as an administrative arm for providing services to the Cree community, and for environmental protection. Both organisations have the same board of directors. |
