Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) was set up in 1993 to ensure that the Nunavut Political Accord was lived up to and that the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA) was properly carried out. Article 4 of the NLCA, dealing with Nunavut political development, mandates NTI, the successor to the Tunngavik Federation of Nunavut (TFN), to negotiate a political accord to deal with the establishment of Nunavut. NTI is responsible for advancing and protecting Inuit interests.
NTI’s ten member Board meets regularly in different Nunavut communities to debate issues and make decisions on implementation of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. The focus of the NTI includes safeguarding the environment, advancing and protecting Inuit interests and rights as well as business development, supporting Inuit hunters and assisting Inuit Elders. |
