The Beaufort Delta Political Accord was signed in December 1998 and came into effect on March 31, 2000. It obliges the Government of Canada, Government of the Northwest Territories, Gwich’in Tribal Council and Inuvialuit Regional Corporation to work together towards self-government in the Beaufort-Delta Region.
The Accord outlines a variety of subjects where a cross-government approach is necessary. These include regional program and service initiatives, governing capacity, planning measures, resource control and capacity building. The parties agree to meet periodically to share ideas and information. The discussions are to support the negotiation of a Beaufort-Delta Self-Government Agreement. |
