Moree Plains Shire is situated in New South Wales on the border with Queensland. It is one of the largest Local Government areas in New South Wales. The town of Moree is 647 kilometres north-west of Sydney and 444 kilometres south-west of Brisbane. In 1999 the population of the Shire was estimated at 17,200 with over 10,000 living in the town of Moree. The Indigenous population is approximately 2,615 people, or 17 percent of the Shire, with the majority of Indigenous people living in Moree. Over the years the rural economy has changed from a concentration on wheat and wool to an expanding focus on cotton. Approximately one third of Australia's cotton is grown in the region.
