| The MoU outlines the specific undertakings of the parties to further develop a Noongar Aboriginal Economic Development Strategy.
According to the DoIR, 30% of adult Noongars living in the south west of Western Australia were unemployed, with minimal education or training and few young people were completing secondary schooling.
The DoIR’s Office of Aboriginal Economic Development worked with Noongar leaders for the year leading to the signing of the MoU to develop an economic development strategy. ‘This strategy aims to improve the economic well-being of Noongar people and provide them with a sound financial basis for business development […]. This will allow them to create new employment opportunities through culturally acceptable and financially viable industry sectors that currently exist or could be developed.’ (DoIR Director General Jim Limerick in 'MOU paves the way for new Aboriginal economic opportunities in South West', (DoIR media release 8 October 2003)).
A sub-committee of SWALSC has been established to develop and implement the various strategies. | |
