Mura Badulgal (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation is the registered native title body corporate nominated as trustee of the Badugal People's native title as determined by consent in Nona on behalf of the Badulgal v State of Queensland [2004] FCA 1578 (14 December 2004). The Corporation was incorporated on 8 February 2001 under the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976 (Cth). Article 6 of the Rules of Association sets out the objects of the Corporation. They are to hold the native title rights and interests of the Badulgal people on trust, to perform the functions of a registered native title body corporate under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), to ensure that the welfare and interests of the Badulgal people are paramount and to assist in the formation and governance of the Council of Elders in order to enhance land claim decisions. Membership of the Mura Badulgal (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation is open to adult Badulgal native title holders whether they live at Badu Island Island or elsewhere. The Corporation is a signatory party to the Pumpkin Island (Koey Ngurtai) Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) (20 February 2004), the Telstra Badu Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) (28 June 2005 - 28 June 2040) and the Badu Island - Ergon Energy Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) (24 May 2005). |
