South coast of Western Australia, approximately 403 kilometres southeast of Perth, the State capital. The City covers an area of 4315 square kilometres stretching along the coastline from the Hay River in the west to the Pallinup River in the east. It is bordered by the Shires of Denmark, Plantagenet, Gnowangerup and Jerramungup.
Summary Information:
Albany is the regional centre and administrative hub for the Great Southern region of Western Australia. It has a total population of approximately 31,000 (January 2001, based on 2001 ABS figures adjusted). The total Indigenous population is estimated to be 810 (as at 31 December 2002), and is predominantly Noongar. Albany has a vibrant agricultural and rural sector with fishing as a major industry. Albany is an important tourist destination.
