|BHP Billiton’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was submitted in July 1995 to a federally appointed Environmental Assessment Review Panel (EARP) for the purpose of determining the viability of the Ekati Diamond Mine Project. The EARP conducted hearings and subsequently submitted its final report to the federal government in June 1996. The report concluded that the environmental effects of the proposed project were ‘largely predictable and mitigable’. The EARP recommended that the project be approved by the federal government subject to the 29 recommendations set out in its report.
