Summary Information:
The Guraki Committee is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advisory panel which assists the Newcastle City Council. It was established on 1 June 1999 as part of the 1998 Commitment by Newcastle Council to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples of the City of Newcastle. Since that time, the Guraki Committee has been involved in numerous City Council initiatives.These include: -An Aboriginal delegation to Japan, June 2001; -The Newcastle City Council Aboriginal Employment Strategy; -An Aboriginal site survey funded by the New South Wales Heritage Office, 2003; and -Past Present Future: The Newcastle City Council's annual youth reconciliACTION project. The Committee’s main function is to assist the implementation of the Commitment by Newcastle City Council to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples of the City of Newcastle. It is to do this by providing advice on how the central principles set out in the Commitment can be translated into Council processes and practices.
