| The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) describes NAIDOC Week as 'a way of celebrating and promoting a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and our culture.' It is the outcome of a long history of efforts to bring Indigenous issues to the attention of government and the general public.
The National Aborigines' Day Observance Committee (NADOC) was first established with the assistance of federal and state governments, the churches and key Aboriginal organisations in 1957. The second Sunday in July was nominated as a day of remembrance of Aboriginal people and heritage. 1975 was the first time the celebration took place over a week. In 1991, NADOC became known as NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) to include Torres Strait Islanders.
NAIDOC Week has a different theme each year. In 2004 the focus was ‘Self-Determination - Our Community - Our Future - Our Responsibility’. | |
