| The University of Melbourne (the University) is Victoria's first university. The secular publicly owned institution was established in 1853 under Victorian legislation. The Universtiy later became a Commonwealth funded institution, however it opened a private wing in 1998. Upon opening the University had 16 students, though enrolment is now in the thousands and there were 16 faculties as of 2006. |
