The Palmerston Indigenous Village 'Keeping young people healthy and active' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was made between residents of the Palmerston Indigenous Village, the Palmerston City Council and the Commonwealth government. The SRA will fund a new Community Development Officer to assist with community planning and healthy activities for young people. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. Detailed Information:
Purpose The SRA focuses on creating a community plan and developing healthy activities for young people. The SRA creates a partnership agreement between the Palmerston City Council, local residents and the Commonwealth Government to achieve this aim. Shared Responsibilities The Commonwealth government will fund the repair and maintenance of the community hall and purchase recreational equipment. Together with Palmerston City Council, the government will fun the employment of a Community Development Officer and an Activities Officer. Commonwealth for the project totals $150,000. The Palmerston City Council will also hold fortnightly meetings with residents on community development issues. The residents of the Palmerston Indigenous Village will work with the new Community Development Officer and local council to develop a community plan. Labour for the community hall upgrade will be provided by the residents, including some young people. The Palmerston Indigenous Village 'Keeping young people healthy and active' SRA will be negotiated by the Darwin Indigenous Coordination Centre.
