Structured Training Employment Projects (STEP) form part of a policy initiated by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to increase the number of jobs for Indigenous Australians.
STEP is designed to create long term employment opportunities, particularly in the private sector. Funding is available in packages to employers who then provide structured and accredited training such as traineeships or apprenticeships. STEP funding is also provided to community and public sector organisations, and can be provided to intermediary organisations who train potential employees.
STEP forms part of the Commonwealth government’s Indigenous Employment Policy implemented in July 1999. |
