The Darla Urban Development Project is a result of the Residential Development Agreement between the Larrakia and the Northern Territory Government (executed in June 2002) which enabled the Larrakia people to acquire 50 hectares of land in Rosebery from the Northern Territory Government for the purpose of residential development. |
Detailed Information:
The Larrakia Development Corporation (LDC) was established in 2002 with the assistance of the Northern Land Council for the purpose of managing the Darla development. Funding for the first stage of development was secured by June 2005. The first stage of the project was completed during the course of 2002-2003. This comprised the development of 57 residential lots to create the suburb of Darla, costing approximately (AUD) 2.5 million dollars. The titles to land at Darla were issued in May 2003. By the close of the year, 28 of the lots had been sold.
The creation of Darla is the first in a five stage project that will ultimately see the construction of 390 residential lots at a cost of (AUD) 24 million dollars. It is envisaged that work on the second stage of the project will commence in 2003-2004.
The Darla project has created training and employment opportunities for Larrakia people in areas such as labouring and plant operation.
