Sub Category:Memorandum of Understanding
Place:Darwin
State/Country:Northern Territory, Australia
Subject Matter: | Employment and Training
Summary Information:
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Northern Land Council, the Territory Construction Association, the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation and the Larrakia Development Corporation (MOU) was signed on 24 August 2005. The agreement is designed to deliver training and employment opportunities to Indigenous people on the Darwin Waterfront Development Project.
Detailed Information:
It is expected that up to 25 jobs will be delivered immediately to Larrakia people with further opportunities to emerge as the construction of the Waterfront Project continues. In addition to the pre-vocational training and jobs provided, five people will have the opportunity to undertake apprenticeships. Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation presently employs approximately 80 people through the Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) program. The negotiations surrounding the MOU focussed on the new direction of CDEP programs in achieving employment outcomes for participants. The MOU continues the relationship established between the Northern Land Council and the Territory Construction Agency (TCA) in 2002 when an Employment and Training Unit was established as a result of the collaboration on the Alice Springs to Darwin Railway Project. Similarly, the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation has existing ties with the TCA developed as a result of cooperation during the construction of the Wickham Point LNG project. It is envisaged that the MOU will assist in raising the commercial profile of the Larrakia with major construction businesses and thereby deliver long-term employment and business opportunities. Construction of the (AUD) $102.85 million Darwin Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of the $1 billion Waterfront Project is scheduled to commence towards the end of 2005.
