| The Indigenous Community at Tumut signed a Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) with the Commonwealth and New South Wales Governments to fund the Bila Park Cultural and Heritage Project. Bila Park is one of Tumut's premier parks, and the Cultural and Heritage Project will showcase local Indigenous history and culture at the site.
Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose
The SRA focuses on programs to build activities and skills for young people, at the same time as improving their education in traditional culture. It is also hoped that the SRA will foster links between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
Shared Responsibilities
The Commonwealth Government will provide $60,000 to fund the completion of Bila Park. It will also provide funds for cultural activities and share costs for an awards program for Indigenous students with the New South Wales Government.
The NSW Government will provide training and employment programs for the community’s young people, particularly in the local forest industry, and donate native trees to plant in Bila Park.
The community will work with the local school to improve attendance rates. CDEP activities will be changed to reflect community priorities e.g. completing Bila Park, environmental projects, and helping Aboriginal Education Workers support Koori kids at local schools.
The community will engage in cultural activities such as learning Wiradjuri language through Bila Park and the local school. Community members will plant trees in the park and assist with its maintenance and security. Local elders and community members will mentor the young' (SRA Fact Sheet).
