Summary Information:
The Indigenous Community at Bourke signed two Shared Responsibility Agreements (SRAs) with the Commonwealth and New South Wales Governments in 2005 to improve community safety and school attendance. The latter aim is the focus of the 'Helping Kids Stay at School' SRA, which considers the relevance of the school curriculum to local Indigenous children. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see ‘Shared Responsibility Agreement’ below.
Detailed Information:
Purpose The SRA develops innovative ways to encourage school attendance in response to the community's wish for the school curriculum to be more relevant to their children. Shared Responsibilities The Commonwealth and New South Wales Governments have committed to working with the community to 'develop new ways of keeping kids at school' (SRA Fact Sheet). This includes looking at different ways of educating Indigenous students. The local community has agreed to mentor young people, and to work with families to ensure school attendance. The Bourke SRAs are administered by the Bourke Indigenous Coordination Centre
