| The Arnhem Land Aboriginal Land Trust was created by the Commonwealth Minister for Aboriginal Affairs pursuant to the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). Land Trusts generally consist of a Chairperson and not less than three other members (membership of around six traditional Aboriginal owners is common).
Members are nominated by the relevant Land Council (in this instance the Northern Land Council) and appointed by the Minister. All land vested in a Land Trust must be managed in accordance with directions from the relevant Land Council.
The Arnhem Land Aboriginal Land Trust holds two deeds of grant over land in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. These grants were made on 30 May 1980 under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). The deeds of grant cover the area formerly comprising the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, and include numerous adjacent islands. Both the deed of grant for the mainland and for the adjacent islands extend to the low water mark. |
