Areyonga is a remote Aboriginal community located 220 kilometres west of Alice Springs. It has a population of approximately 215.
According to the Areyonga Council:
"Areyonga lies on the western limit of the traditional tribal lands of the Western Arrernte and north to the limit of the Pitjantjatjara land. The people of Areyonga are of the Pitjantjatjara tribal group with a few Arrernte and Walpiri who have joined the Community through marriage.
The country has been reserved for Aboriginals, although natural mineral resources have been exploited from time to time. Areyonga does not experience major seasonal movement of population between other Communities and Urban centres. The relative permanence of the core groups provides a stability in management of community affairs and lifestyle. It's relationship with other communities is essentially on the basis of visiting related families. The people of Areyonga, Mutijulu and Docker River are all related Pitjantjatjara people." |
