| The Banatjarl 'Health Education for Children and Young People' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is an agreement between the Katherine, Wugularr, Barunga and Manyallaluk Aboriginal communities and the Commonwealth Government to provide a health-focused school holiday program at Banatjarl, a traditional area used by women and children from the communities.
Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose
Banatjarl is a safe and secure area for women and children of the Katherine, Wugularr, Barunga and Manyallaluk Aboriginal communities, that is free from violence and substance abuse. The SRA provides for Banatjarl to host a one-week school holiday program focused on health. The program ‘will incorporate healthy lifestyle workshops and introduce role models and mentors’ for young people from the communities.
Shared Responsibilities
The communities will encourage their young people to attend the school holiday program, and will provide positive role models/mentors to assist with the event. Parents in particular will volunteer to assist with activities. All community members will respect the ‘no drug, no alcohol’ rule for the Banatjarl area.
The Commonwealth Government will fund the event.
The Jawoyn Association, a local community organisation, will transport participating young people to and from Banatjarl. | |
