The Community Services (Aborigines) Act 1984 (Qld) and the Community Services (Torres Strait) Act 1984 (Qld) were enacted in conjunction with a series of amendments to the Land Act 1962 (Qld), creating a system of community level councils to own and administer former reserves or missions under a Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT). The Councils have the status of local government areas and are able to make by-laws and appoint community police, and are responsible for maintaining housing, infrastructure, the Community Development Employment Program (similar to work for the dole), licenses and hunting and camping permits. |
