The Slave Indians traditionally inhabited areas in the far-north of the province now known as Alberta between Lake Athabasca and Great Slave Lake, and on the southern portion of the Mackenzie River. The name 'slavey' derives from a translation of the Algonkian Cree term awahkaan, meaning captive or slave. The group consisted of six smaller groupings. The Slave are members of the Athapaskan language group. |
