| Inverell Shire Council was formed in 1979 after the amalgamation of three smaller shire councils. According to the Council's website, the shire 'covers an area of 8,623 square kilometres of rich farm and grazing land, including large mineral deposits, particularly tin and sapphires - the area produces the majority of the world's sapphires.' |
