Detailed Information:
The British Columbia Treaty Commission Agreement was entered into on 15 May 1997 by representatives of the First Nations Summit and Her Majesty The Queen in right of Canada and her Majesty the Queen in right of the Province of British Columbia. The agreement outlines matters including:
  • the establishment of the commission;
  • the role of the commission;
  • membership of the commission;
  • funding for the operations of the commission;
  • duties of the commission;
  • powers of the commission; and
  • protection of members of the commission. Most significantly however, the agreement incorporated the six-stage treaty process first outlined in the British Columbia Claims Task Force Report of 1991, a process that now forms the basis of the treaty making procedure in British Columbia. The Agreement was then entered into legal force through the Treaty Commission Act (See Below).
