  • Detailed Information:
    The Constitution divides power into three different organs – the General Assembly; the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Council and the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Courts. The General Assembly is comprised of all Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in citizens over the age of 18. It has responsibility for:
  • 'reviewing and approving reports, including financial reports, received from the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Council and staff by way of resolution;
  • providing direction to Chief and Council by way of resolution;
  • enacting and repealing Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in laws;
  • enacting land use codes and guidelines pertaining to Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Settlement Lands and other lands under the jurisdiction of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in;
  • establishing remuneration rates for the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Council; and
  • approving the borrowing of amounts exceeding five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000.00).' The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Council is comprised of a chief and four councillors plus one ex-oficio Elder Council and one ex-officio Youth Councillor. The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Council 'shall have the power and responsibility to manage and represent the interests and affairs of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, as well as all subjects, persons, property, and activities within the jurisdiction of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in', including, but not limited to:
  • 'managing Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in lands;
  • managing and allocating privileges on traplines owned by Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in;
  • preparing laws and by-laws for presentation to the General Assembly;
  • managing Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in monies, resources, and assets;
  • maintaining current and up to date financial records and strict financial accountability;
  • ensuring that all valid laws passed by the General Assembly are enforced.' Also part of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in are the Youth and Elders Council, who advise the council on issues relevant to their particular constituents. The administrative functions of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in are carried out by different departments, including those relating to:
  • agreement implementation;
  • land & resource;
  • mapping;
  • fish & wildlife;
  • finance & housing;
  • heritage;
  • health & society;
  • human relations & education; and
  • strategic initiatives.
