    Summary Information:
    The Cherbourg ‘Reduce Vandalism and Increase School Attendance’ Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is an agreement between the Australian Government and Queensland Police Service, the Cherbourg State School, the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council and the Cherbourg Indigenous Community. The SRA is aimed at targeting the boredom of the youth of Cherbourg, decreasing incidences of vandalism and increasing their levels of attendance at school through extra-curricular programs and activities. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding.     Detailed Information:
    Purpose The purpose of this SRA is to address the community-identified problem of boredom, which is a major factor driving the levels of vandalism within the community. In collaboration with the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council and the Queensland Police, the community will deliver sporting and recreational activities for school-age young people on weekends, public holidays and during school holidays. A pilot project run over the Christmas period of 2005-2006 was successful in decreasing the levels of vandalism. The Queensland police estimated that the community saved $30,000 in costs usually associated with cleaning and repairing damage caused by vandalism. Shared Responsibilities The agreed shared responsibilities involve the community, families and individuals and the external funding bodies. Funding and contributions will provide the community with a youth officer, the coordination and the provision of staff through the Cherbourg Police and Community Youth project. The Cherbourg State School will work with individuals and families to achieve goals related with school attendance. The Cherbourg Community Council will use its’ Sport and Recreation Program to link with the activities under the SRA. Volunteers will be utilised for the school holidays care program. This funding and support is subject to the partners entering into a legally binding funding agreement. Performance Indicators The SRA provides for feedback based on several indicators, including quarterly reports on the instances of vandalism and attendance rates and education outcomes.
