The Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council is responsible for the needs of the Aboriginal community in and around Cherbourg. Cherbourg has an Aboriginal community of approximately 2500 permanant resients.
Cherbourg is run administratively by the Cherbourg Community Council and it is a part of the South Burnett Local Government Association.
The main tribal groups in the region are the Wakka Wakka people and the Culidy people.
