    Summary Information:
The Wagga Wagga 'Growing Connection to Culture and Community' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is an agreement between the Commonwealth and New South Wales Governments, the TAFE NSW Riverina Institute and the Indigenous community of Wagga Wagga. It is intended to provide support for the establishment of a market garden to increase horticultural training and work experience opportunities, as well as improve the nutrition and health of the community. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
    Detailed Information:
Purpose The purpose of the agreement is to provide additional resources for a market garden and to encourage members to establish their own gardens to increase production, opportunities for training and work experience, and improve the health and nutrition of community members by increasing the availability of positive social activities and fresh fruit and vegetables. Shared Responsibilities The Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (Cth) will provide $20,000 towards the cost of water, materials and equipment for the project. TAFE NSW (Riverina Institute) will provide in-kind administrative, technical and project management assistance. The Riverina TAFE campus will provide horticultural assistance and training for up to twenty people as part of a substance abuse and juvenile justice diversion program, as well as providing advice and assistance to ten local families to establish backyard gardens. Waagan Waagan Project Group representatives will provide volunteers to manage and supervise the project. Elders from the community will volunteer their time to deliver workshops in traditional plant use, including training in the recognition, collection and propagation of native food plants. Members from the community will encourage participation in the project, building on existing skills and resources. The Wagga Wagga Indigenous Coordination Centre will liaise with the project officer on a regular basis to ensure ongoing communication between the participants and funding agencies. Performance Indicators and Feedback Mechanisms Important milestones for the project include the holding of the first training workshop on local plant identification, collection, use and propagation by Elders, the first horticultural workshop conducted by participants from Riverina TAFE, and the establishment of the first backyard vegetable garden. A Project Officer will provide quarterly reports on specified performance indicators, including the number of families with backyard gardens, the number of Elders conducting workshops on local plant uses and associated knowledge and skills, the number of volunteers holding horticultural workshops, and participation rates at the workshops conducted.
