The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, or ‘People of the lakes’ is located in the north of the Yukon territory of Canada, based around the township of Old Crow. It is one of the most isolated communties in the Yukon province, situated 128km into the Arctic Circle, and accessible only by aircraft or canoe down the Eagle River.
The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation has a membership of approximately 300 people. Their main source of livelihood is trapping, hunting, particularly of the porcupine caribou, and also fishing. The first language of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation is ‘Gwich’in’.
