| The Indian Claims Commission (ICC) was established in 1991 by the Canadian Federal Government in consultation with Aboriginal organisations mandated to help first Nations and the federal government with claims.
The Commission has authority to conduct inquiries into specific claims, pursuant to the Specific claims policy when the government has breached an agreement, treaty or statute, such as the Indian Act.
As an alternative to costly adversarial proceedings to resolve specific claims, the Indian Claims commission also provides mediation services to First Nations and government.
