The Memorandum of Understanding between the Northern Land Council (NLC) and Group Training Northern Territory (GTNT) was signed by Norman Fry, the chief executive of the NLC, and Peter Carew of GTNT on 19 November 2007.
The MOU is designed to increase the number of indigenous apprenticeships in all industry sectors in the Northern Territory. It is hoped that this will alleviate the skills shortage in the Northern Territory, enable more indigenous Territorians 'to enter the mainstream economy' and to assist Indigenous people in addressing issues such as unemployment and inadequate housing in their own communities (see Land Rights News 2007, 14; Langford 2007; NLC 2007).
The chief executive of GTNT, Mike Harrison, said that he planned to increase the number of indigenous apprenticeships arranged through GTNT from 180 to 360 within three years (Langford 2007).
