Memorandum of Understanding between Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation and Mallee Family Care | | Date: | March 2007 | | | Sub Category: | Memorandum of Understanding | | Place: | | | State/Country: | New South Wales, Australia | | Subject Matter: | | Health and Community Services | Youth | | Summary Information: | | | The Memorandum of Understanding between Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation and Mallee Family Care ('the MOU') was signed by the Regional Director of Maari Ma, Richard Weston, and the Deputy Executive Director of Mallee Family Care, Fiona Harley, in Dareton in March 2007.
The MOU is designed to formalise the long-standing, informal partnership between the parties, particularly in relation to the Youth Action Project (YAP) and the 'Our Journey to Respect' Project. YAP involves the coordination of recreational activities in schools in the Wentworth Shire, in order to enable young people to be role models of good behaviour (Maari Ma 2008). Our Journey to Respect is designed for male Indigenous young people who are at risk of using violence (Maari Ma, Maari Ma Health Rounds: 4). The MOU enables the parties to work together in expanding these and other community programs (Maari Ma, Maari Ma Health Rounds 2007: 4).
Other initiatives to achieve the aims of the partnership include:
'Identifying community needs in conjunction with the Community Working Party.
Forming a cooperative approach to Social and Emotional Wellbeing for Youth and Families.
Adopting a “best practice” approach to meeting community Social and Emotional needs.
Effectively utilizing current and future resources of Maari Ma Health and Mallee Family Care for the mutual benefit of the communities within the areas they serve.
Engendering and supporting the development of indigenous leadership in the community' (see Maynard 2007).
| | Outcomes: | | | One outcome has been that the Health Worker employed by Maari Ma and based with Mallee Family Care, facilitated an eight-week program for 11-17 year old Aboriginal girls, called the 'Moopra Noongus' group (Maari Ma, Annual Report 2007: 19). | |
