State/Country:New South Wales, Australia
Alternative Names:
  • The Arakwal Agreement
  • Subject Matter:Recognition of Native Title or Traditional Ownership | Local Government
    Summary Information:
The Byron Shire-Arakwal People Agreement is between the Arakwal people and the Byron Shire Council. The Shire recognises the Arakwal as the traditional owners of the region.
    Detailed Information:
The Byron Shire Aboriginal Consultative Committee is to be established with the aim of setting up cooperative arrangements to manage land issues in the Shire in a way that takes into account the interests of the Arakwal. An additional agreement was reached in 1997 between the Arakwal people and State of New South Wales regarding a new State Recreation Area in the Byron Bay region. In 1998 the Heads of Agreement between the Byron Bay Shire Council and the Arakwal people was signed. The Heads of Agreement represented the first substantial agreement between a local shire council and native title applicants in New South Wales. Each of these three agreements preceded the 2001 Native Title Consent Determination involving the Arakwal People of the Bundjalung Nation and the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, NSW Minister for Land and Water Conservation and Telstra Limited (FC: NG6088/98; NNTT: NC97/36), and the 2001 Arakwal Indigenous Land Use Agreement.
