    Summary Information:
    UNTAET was established on 25 October 1999 to administer the territory of East Timor (Timor-Leste) following the referendum which resulted in a vote for independence from Indonesia. UNTAET remained in control of East Timor's executive and legislative functions, as well as 'capacity building' for self-rule, until formal independence was declared on 20 May 2002.
