The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) was formerly known as the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA).
The purpose of DIMA is to 'enrich Australia through the well managed entry and settlement of people'. The DIMA Plan 2006-2007, launched on 18 July 2006, identifies the Department's key objectives:
- to manage the lawful and orderly entry and stay of people in Australia, including through effective border security; and
- to promote a society which values Australian citizenship, appreciates cultural diversity and enables migrants to participate equitably.
The Department has since changed its name and is currently known as 'The Department of Immigration and Citizenship' (DIAC) |
