The Sami reindeer herding community in Vapsten are a large specific reindeer herding group. The Sami people are the Indigenous people of the northern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula and large parts of the Kola Peninsula and live in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. The Sami people have a population of about 50,000-100,000. The Sami are descendants of normadic peoples who inhabited northern Scandinavia for thousands of years. Reindeer herding embodies a central tenant of their cultural identity and traditional livelihood. |
