The objects of Navigation Act 2012 (Cth), found in section 3, are to:
- promote the safety of life at sea;
- promote safe navigation;
- prevent pollution of the marine environment, and;
- ensure that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority has the necessary power to carry out inspections of vessels and enforce national and international standards.
