The Uutaalnganu (Night Island) People's native title rights and interests were recognised in Ross on behalf of the Cape York United #1 Claim Group v State of Queensland (No 3) [2021] FCA 1465. At [2] Mortimer J explains that the name 'Night Island' is used by group members as well as anthropologists, citing anthropologist, Dr David Thompson's connection report: "The common reference of Uutaalnganu people as "Night Island" by themselves and others has its origins in the contact lugger period when a beche-de-mer base camp was located on the coast opposite Night Island ... and both the location and local people were known as "Night Island" in the early pidgin of the time'.
