Summary Information:
The North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) Planning & Management Study is to be jointly undertaken between the Redland Shire Council and the Quandamooka Land Council Aboriginal Corporation. It will provide a framework for the resolution of environmental, cultural, social and economic issues on Minjerribah and lead to the development of an agreement on native title, a strategic plan and a management framework agreement. The parties have already jointly formulated a project brief in this regard.
Detailed Information:
In December 1994 Quandamooka Land Council Aboriginal Corporation lodged a native title claim with the National Native Title Tribunal for an area incorporating land and waters in Moreton Bay (Quandamooka). This led to discussions between the Redland Shire Council, as a party to the claim, and the claimants, which revealed that the Council and the claimants held similar views about the future of North Stradbroke Island, including the need for a joint planning and management study. A steering committee comprising representatives from the Quandamooka Lands Council and Redland Shire Council has been established to oversee the study. A project coordinator has also been employed by both parties to manage the study and specialist advice will be provided by the engagement of other consultants.
