The Central Desert Shire Council was established 1st July 2008 as part of the large scale amalgamation process of particularly community government councils in the Northern Territory. The existing community government councils were absorbed by eight new shire councils (Edgar, 247). The Central Desert Shire absorbed the previous community government areas of Anmatjere, Yuelamu, Arltarlpilta, Nyirripi, Lajamanu, Yuendumu, and Willowra.
Detailed Information:
The Shire's objective is 'to collaborate in one spirit together guided by strong leadership and good management to provide high quality services across the Central Desert Shire’ (Shire website). The Shire has 12 elected Councillors exercising local government functions over approximately 282,093kms2 of land, which is comprised of a large unincorporated area and the communities that were previously managed by the community government councils. The Central Desert Shire Council is one of six partners involved in the Tanami Regional Partnership Agreement (RPA), which is intended to deliver better education, training and job outcomes to the Warlpiri people of the Tanami region.
