The Aboriginal Housing Company Ltd (AHC) is 'a multi award winning Aboriginal governed organiastion, located in the heart of Redfern. The AHC is an independent non-profit charity and the first community housing provider in Australia' (AHC c2006).
The AHC formed out of the Aboriginal Housing Committee (Standing Committee 2004: 36). It was established 'in direct response to the widespread discrimination Aborigines experienced in the private rental market. The [AHC] also helped kick start the grassroots Indigenous civil rights movement, in conjunction with other organisations like the Aboriginal Medical, Legal and Children's Services' (AHC c2006). It was incorporated in July 1973 (Standing Committee 2004: 38).
The AHC solely owns the freehold title of 'the Block' - the residential area within Eveleigh, Vine, Louis and Caroline Streets in Redfern (AHC 2006; Standing Committee 2004: 39). It 'also owns over 40 properties in other parts of Redfern, NSW and Queensland' (Standing Committee 2004: 39).
The AHC has affiliations with the Redfern Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, the Redfern Aboriginal Authority, the NSW Federation of Housing Associations Inc, ARCH (the Association to Resource Co-operative Housing) and the Property Council of Australia (AHC c2006). It has received grants from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and the Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) (Standing Committee 2004: 38). |
